Geography
‘A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.’ National Curriculum 2014
Geography is led by Miss Pottinger
We tell the children that Geography lessons teach us about the environment we live in and the world around us.
Geography Intent
At Nursteed our aim is to allow children to explore interactions between people and the environment which they live and depend on. Here geography helps to prepare children for life in the 21st century with all of its currently unknown possibilities. The geography curriculum from Early Years to Year 6 stimulates pupils' interest in their surroundings and in the variety of human and physical geography conditions on the earth's surface. It aims to foster pupils' sense of wonder in the natural beauty around them and to develop a sense of concern about the quality of our environment. We want children to foster a sense of responsibility for the care of the earth and its people.
Geography Implementation
Geography is taught across all year groups including EYFS whereby children explore and understand the world around them. We alternate our Geography and History wider curriculum teaching which ensures that our children receive well rounded teaching of the humanities subjects throughout the academic year. From EYFS through to Year 6 we aim to carry out fieldwork at least one a year to support children’s' understanding of geography. This includes welly walks, visits to the schools' wildlife area, as well as visits to local areas of interest.
Geography Impact
Through this curriculum coverage, children leave us in Year 6 with the knowledge and skills they need to understand their local environment, country and the wider world. Children will foster a sense of responsibility to care for our environment and its people.

Children understand and appreciate the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and those of others. They understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within school and further afield through geographical studies as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain.
Children show an interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity, as shown by their tolerance and attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities through studies of other parts of the world.
